MARCUS SMITH SHOOTS JAZZ LEGEND ROSCOE MITCHELL FOR THE NEW YORK TIMES

COVID-19 has challenged our artists' creativity and the results have been unexpected, raw and beautiful.
The New York Times recently sent Marcus to Madison, WI to photograph jazz legend, Roscoe Mitchell at his home. Famous for his extraordinary ability to improvise, Marcus' images accompany an article on Mitchell and incorporating improvisation in musical programming. Mitchell is immunocompromised. He would not have Marcus in his home due to COVID-19 and he would not go outside due to his condition. So, Marcus climbed a ladder and photographed him through his sun room.
